Erik Bedard Gets Hit Hard In Rays 8-1 Loss To Tigers

Rays Record Just Two Hits As Five-Game Win Streak Ends

Erik Bedard Gets Hit Hard

The Rays modest five-game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Tigers today, as they dropped the first game of the weekend series by a final of 8-1.

Erik Bedard got the start but he wouldn’t last long in this one. He lasted just two innings and gave up six earned runs on eight hits, including three home runs, and two walks without striking out a single batter.

The Rays did their job early though, as they gave Bedard a 1-0 lead before he even took the mound on a sacrifice fly by Evan Longoria.

The Tigers came out swinging as well, and put the Rays lead to shame right away as they scored five runs in the bottom of the first.

In fact, the Tigers scored four runs on a pair of two-run homers by Ian Kinsler and Victor Martinez before Bedard even recorded an out. Two batters late, Torii Hunter homered as well to cap the Tigers rally at five runs.

I’m not sure if you would even call it a rally, as it was just an absolute mashing by the Tigers hitters, but nonetheless it was a lead the Max Scherzer wouldn’t let the Rays even think about recovering from.

Scherzer threw eight strong innings, allowing just the one run on two hits, one walk, and seven strikeouts.

Bedard picks up his sixth loss on the season in this one and the Rays suffered their 50th loss of the season. The team is now 38-50 and Joe Maddon‘s goal of reaching .500 at the 100 game mark is pretty much out of the water at this point.

Crazier things have happened in baseball, and the Rays were at the center of it three years ago when Evan Longoria belted them into the wildcard lead with a walk-off home run. The Rays have also played better of late – winning seven of their last ten – so the rest of the season will be interesting to watch.

Tomorrow’s Probables:

Tomorrow the Rays will look to even the series at a game a piece as they send Alex Cobb (3-6, 4.20) to the hill to square off against Drew Smyly (4-7, 3.57).
