Arsenal let a golden opportunity slip through their fingers to oust Chelsea from the top of the Barclays Premier League table as they were held to a 0-0 draw by Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium. So at least for another week the Gunners remain in second place.
In what was a tight game throughout the Gunners best chance of the day came when Laurent Koscielny, who had a header cleared off the line by Antonio Valencia while Gunners goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny produced a stunning late save to push Robin van Persie’s powerful header on to the crossbar.
At the end of a tough day manager Arsene Wenger’s men have moved to within a point of leaders Chelsea and two ahead of Manchester City.
Meanwhile the game of the day on Wednesday saw Liverpool kept their championship hopes burning with a stunning last second win over Fulham 3-2.
The Reds were 2-1 down after 64 minutes after Kieran Richardson added to Kolo Toure’s first-half own goal. But Philippe Coutinho equalised on 72 minutes with a deflected shot while Steven Gerrard held his nerve to score the winner from the penalty spot after Daniel Sturridge was brought down in the penalty area.
Liverpool are now only one point behind third placed Manchester City, whose home match against Sunderland was one of two matches postponed because of bad weather.Everton’s contest against Crystal Palace was also called off.
Tottenham Hotspur highlighted their top-four credentials with a fine display at St James’ Park, with Emmanuel Adebayor continuing his impressive form with two goals in a 4-0 victory over Newcastle United. He has now scored eight Barclays Premier League goals this season. Paulinho was also on the scoresheet, while Nacer Chadli completed the scoring with superb curling shot into the far corner.
Swansea City earned a point at Stoke City thanks to a headed equaliser from Chico Flores. Peter Crouch had given the home side the lead on 17 minutes with a deflected shot but Chico restored parity early in the second half from Pablo Hernandez’s cross.
