EPL: Manchester United loses their 2014-15 opener
Manchester United lost their opening game 2-1 at Old Trafford as Swansea. A late goal by Gylfi Sigurdsson of Swansea sent the Red Devils fans home sad and gave a rude welcome to new head coach Louis van Gaal in his opening game in the Barclays Premier League 2014-15.
It was the biggest upset of the first day of the EPL as the season got underway today.
In London, Tottenham Hotspur beat West Ham United 1-0 at Boleyn Ground to make it a memorable derby for Mauricio Pochettino in his opening game. Eric Dier scored the goal in injury time to make his own debut memorable.
In other matches, Everton and LeicesterCity drew 2-2 while West Bromwich Albion and Sunderland drew with the same score. Stoke City and Queens Park Rangers lost their match against Aston Villa and Hull City respectively, both by a 1-0 score at their home stadium.
The Barclays Premier league season of 2014-15 is likely to be an extremely competitive tournament. There are at least five contenders who can win the championship. They are Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United. The dark horses will be Totenham Hotspur and Everton, although it will be difficult to even remotely consider them to finish as champions, will still add the surprise element to the table. Southampton will be another exciting team in the tournament to make it loads of surprises.
ManchesterCity did not make any big signings but it will be difficult to write them off as they have a complete squad, with at least two players for every position. Chelsea, on the other hand, made some amazing signings for some big bucks, the likes of Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas and Felipe Luis strengthening the side to fill up crucial positions. The cherry on the cake for the Blues fan would be the return of Didier Drogba, their talismanic striker for eight seasons till the Champions League winning season of 2011-12.
Everton and Totenham might not win the Barclays Premier League this season but expect the two sides to spring up a few surprises to make it another exciting and eventful season of football in England.
