I went to Jacksonville to cover the cover the Miami Dolphins- Jacksonville Jaguars preseason game and here our my thoughts on what I like and did not like from the Dolphins 27-3 win.
Miami Dolphins :
Things I like from the Dolphins : I like Dustin Keller at Tight end as a reliable guy for Ryan Tannehill. All the attention is on the Dolphins getting Mike Wallace in Free Agency to be a weapon for Tannehill but Keller could prove to be the guy Tannehill goes to on key 3rd down passing plays.
Things I like from the Dolphins : I like the Dolphins Defense with CB Brent Grimes. Cornerback Brent Grimes looks healthy and looks to make a huge impact on the Dolphins secondary as Philbin and Dolphins trust Grimes to go 1 on 1 without much help. But the Dolphins defense were facing the Jaguars offensethat was short handed, so lets wait and see when the Dolphins actually face a real offense.
Things I like from the Dolphins : Love former Gator and rookie Kicker Caleb Sturgis. Sturgis was a 5th round draft pick in this year’s NFL Draft and has impressed so far. Sturgis kicked a 58 yard field goal on Friday night that impressed the entire media press box and looks prime to win the job from veteran Dan Carpenter. Sturgis may have best leg I seen from a kicker in person since Sebastian Janikowski.
Things I Did not like from the Dolphins : The Dolphins Offensive Line has struggled early in the games which is part of the reason why the Dolphins offense has not look at the start of games. The Dolphins lost left tackle Jake Long to the St Louis Rams and I am not sure they have replaced Long as Jonathan Martin has struggled so far in the tackle position. The Dolphins running game as a result has not been a factor with Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas.
Things I did not like from the Dolphins : New Logo. Hate it just as much in seeing it in person then I do on TV. White jerseys it least way better then the Dolphins colored jerseys.
Here is Post-Game audio from the Miami Dolphins
Dolphins Head Coach Joe Philbin :http://audio.sportstalkflorida.com/1080/Philbin.mp3
Dolphins WR Mike Wallace :http://audio.sportstalkflorida.com/1080/Wallace.mp3
Dolphins Quarterback Ryan Tannehillhttp://audio.sportstalkflorida.com/1080/Tannehill.mp3
Things I like from the Jaguars : I like the new look EverBank Field where the Jaguars play. Good view to watch the game if your a fan with good view of Downtown Jacksonville. I like the fact its right next to Baseball stadium where the Jacksonville Suns play and the arena where the Jacksonville Sharks of the Arena Football League play are all bunch in together. Parking is very simple and many options to park. Good overall Football experience to watch a Football game.
Things I like from the Jaguars : I like Denard Robinson, he showed real good burst and I like how he could be used in many ways either as a running back, puntr returner, kick returner maybe little bit on the slot and even line up as a qb once in a while. Good potential.
Things I did not like from the Jaguars : Quarterback Blaine Gabbert, Gabbert is not the long term guy in Jacksonville, Jaguars offensive coordinator Jed Fish has said he can turn Gabbert into Matt Schawb. I do not see it. Gabbert is still very slow on his decision making. Granted Gabbert did not have Cecil Shorts, Maurice Jones Drew, Justin Blackmon available. Still Chad Henne looked like the better quarterback by far and that’s a problem if your Gabbert. Henne is a journeymen quarterback. Henne is a guy that should be a solid backup qb that can start a few games if needed and be a stop gap qb. If you cannot beat out Henne for the starting Quarterback position then you are not destined to be the next Matt Schaub or even the next David Garrard or even the next……… Chad Henne!
QB Rating from Friday Night : Gabbert 16.7 rating Henne 95.6
Overall, The Dolphins are a work in progress, Tannehill now gets to work with Wallace for the first time in preseason action and try to find some chemistry with each other. The Offensive Line needs to jell better. For the Jaguars its a long rebuilding season. The question the Jaguars must know by the end of the season is do they have a quarterback they can win with long term or will they need to find one in the 2014 NFL Draft? If Friday night was any indication, the Jaguars can start scouting quarterbacks in the upcoming College Football season.
