Dustin Pedroia Expects Thumb Surgery
After playing through a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb for nearly the entire season, Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia expects to have surgery to address the injury “probably in the next couple of weeks.” He made the announcement during an appearance on WEEI’s “Salk & Holley” show yesterday.
Pedroia suffered the injury diving into first base on Opening Day, but ended up playing in 160 regular season games and 16 playoff games. While he finished with nine home runs — his lowest power output since his rookie season in 2007 — he still posted an outstanding .301/.372/.415 batting line.
