Dolphins Mailbag: Who Could Be the Offense’s Biggest Surprise?
We’re back again this week with another edition of the Miami Dolphins mailbag here at Sports Talk Florida!
We received just one question this week (understandable considering how slow NFL news is right now), but it was one certainly worth addressing looking ahead to the 2014 season. Have a question of your own? Send a tweet over to @LouisMusto or @SportsTalkFLA and we’ll fit it into next week’s edition!

The Dolphins have a really good young core of players and there’s going to be at least a few who turn out to be great pickups for the organization. But of the offensive players that really stand out to me on paper and on the tape, I really think it’s rookie Jarvis Landry.
Landry got a lot of flak for running a 4.77 at the NFL Combine, but I’ve seen his film and he plays faster than that. Don’t get me wrong, he’s not fast by any means. No one is going to mistake the former LSU Tiger for a burner, but if you’re looking for a sure-handed possession receiver over the middle, Landry is your guy.
His skill set allows for him to do a variety of things, and I think the Dolphins will really benefit from using him in the slot as appears to be the plan at the moment. With Brian Hartline and Mike Wallace garnering most of the attention outside, Landry should get opportunities to touch the football.
He’s not a major deep threat and he won’t break off a 90-yard touchdown all that often—if ever. But he’s a reliable red zone target with a penchant for the spectacular grab.
I like Billy Turner, the offensive lineman the Dolphins took in the third round this year, also, but I don’t see him having as big an impact this year as Landry will have. Landry was highly productive at LSU while paired with Odell Beckham and should have similar success as Ryan Tannehill’s go-to guy in key situations when Hartline and Wallace can’t get open.
You can find more on my thoughts of Jarvis Landry in this breakdown of the Dolphins’ rookie wideout.
