Dodgers Interested In David Price?

Peter Gammons (Gammons Daily) revealed today that according to an unnamed General Managers the Los Angeles Dodgers may be ready to make big headlines again this winter. According to Gammons source the Dodgers could win the bid for Masahiro Tanaka from Japan and put together a package of prospects to acquire David Price from the Rays.

“They have the minor league talent to get Price, if they would trade Corey Seager and Julio Urias (the 17-year old lefthanded pitcher) and a couple out of Zach Lee, Joc Pederson or Chris Withrow, it would get it done. Then if they post $80M for Tanaka, they could have a rotation with four number ones and a number two with Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Price, Tanaka and Hyun-jin Ryu. But if they were to trade for Price, they’d need the draft pick to fill holes in their development system.”

A quick look at the minor league prospects mentioned:

Corey Seager (3b) was the Dodgers 1st round draft pick (#18 overall) out of Northwest Cabarus high school (North Carolina) in 2012.  In 2013 he split time between the Dodgers A affiliate Great Lake Loons (74 games) and their High A affiliate Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (27 games). While with the Loons he posted a slash line of .309/.389/.529 with 12 homers and 57 RBI. In his short time with the Quakes he struggled hitting .160/.246/.320 with 4 homers and 15 RBI. He is only 19 years old and won’t turn 20 until April 27th.

Julio Urias (LHP) made 18 starts for the Great Lake Loons and 15 of them came as a 16 year old.  In his 18 starts he only worked 54.1 innings but posted a record of 2-0 with a 2.48 ERA striking out 67 of the 211 batters he faced while only walking 16.

Zach Lee (RHP) was the Dodgers first round draft pick (#28) in 2010. He spent this past season pitching for the Dodgers Double A affiliate Chattanooga Lookouts where he posted a 10-10 record in 28 games (25 starts) with a strike rate of 8.3 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9.  Lee just turned 22 in September.

Joc Pederson (CF) was the Dodgers 11th round draft pick in the 2010 draft. He spent the 2013 season with the Lookouts posting a slash line of .278/.381/.497 with 22 home runs 48 RBI and 31 stolen bases.  He will turn 22 on April 21st.

Chris Withrow (RHP) was the Dodgers 1st round pick (#20) in 2007. He made his big league debut with the Dodgers in 2013 pitching in 26 games (all in relief) and posting a record of 3-0 with a 2.60 ERA, a strikeout rate of 11.2 K/9 and a walk rate of 3.4 BB/9. He will be 25 on April 1st.

The Dodgers aren’t allowed to court David Price right now but it didn’t stop them from giving his dog Astro the Very Important Dog (V.I.D.) treatment including this chair and gift basket.
