Cesar Ramos & Defense Ineffective As Rays Fall To Mariners 12-5

The Tampa Bay Rays kicked off their series against the Seattle Mariners with an ineffective outing by their starting pitcher, poor defense, and an offense that slumbered through most of the game en route to a 12-5 defeat.

Cesar Ramos [2] (1-2, 3.71 ERA) took the loss for the Rays as they fall to 16-23 on the season. On a day when the Rays pitching staff could not afford another abbreviated outing from one of their starting pitchers Ramos was forced to wear this one. After falling behind 9-0 after three innings he settled in and was  able to give the team 6.2 innings of work allowing nine runs (five earned) on 11 hits striking out six and walking two. He threw a season and career high 114 pitches with 75 for strikes.

One bright spot for the Rays offense was a four RBI night for Ryan Hanigan [3] and the continued hot hitting of David DeJesus [4] who had another multi-hit game going 2 for 6 with a RBI double.

Felix Hernandez [5] (4-1, 3.03 ERA) picks up the win for the Mariners working 6.2 innings allowing four earned runs on eight hits striking out seven and walking none.  The victory improves the Mariners record to 20-18.

The Rays fell behind 3-0 in the bottom of the first inning as Cesar Ramos [2] allowed the first four hitters to reach base and three of them to score.

After Mike Zunino [6] hit his sixth home run of the year to lead off the second inning Brad Miller [7] sent a routine ground ball to Evan Longoria [8] at third base but his throw pulled James Loney [9] off the bag. James Jones [10] followed with a groundball back to Ramos who wheeled and threw wildly to second to allow Miller to take third. Miller came in to score on a Stefen Romero [11] double with Jones moving up to third and he came in to score on a Robinson Cano [12] sacrifice fly for the first out.

After a Corey Hart [13] walk Justin Smoak [14] lined out to Wil Myers [15] for the second out of the inning but Ramos was unable to escape without further damage as Kyle Seager [16] singled in Romero to push the Mariners lead to 7-0. The Rays defense would falter once again as James Loney [9] made an error on a Dustin Ackley [17] groundball that allowed Corey Hart [13] to cross the plate and put Seattle up 8-0 after two innings.

The Mariners increased their lead to 9-0 in the third inning on a Corey Hart [13] single driving in James Jones [10].

The Rays offense touched Felix Hernandez [5] for four runs in the top of the seventh inning as Sean Rodriguez [18], Logan Forsythe [19], and Wil Myers [15] all singled to load the bases. With two out Hernandez thought he had a strike two call on Ryan Hanigan [3] but home plate umpire Mark Ripperger called it ball three instead. Hanigan split the gap on Hernandez’s next offering to clear the bases and cut the lead to 9-3.

The double by Hanigan ended the night for Felix Hernandez [5] who had some choice words for Ripperger as he left the mound leading to his first ejection of his career.

He was replaced by Tom Wilhelmsen [20] who gave up a double to David DeJesus [4] to plate Hanigan with the Rays fourth run.

Josh Lueke [21] came in to work the remaining 1.1 innings and allowed a solo home run to Stefen Romero [11] and a two run homer to Justin Smoak [14] in the bottom of the eighth inning to push the Mariners lead to 12-4.

Yoervis Medina [22] allowed the Rays to score a two out run when Ryan Hanigan delivered a two-out single to score Yunel Escobar [23] who had drawn a two-out walk.
