Detroit Tigers To Trade Prince Fielder To The Texas Rangers For Ian Kinsler
The finishing touches are being put on a trade that would send first baseman Prince Fielder to the Texas Rangers in exchange for second basemen Ian Kinsler . There may be money involved which will delay the final announcement of the trade pending approval of the commissioners office.
Prince Fielder has seven years left on the 9-year/$214M contract that he signed with the Tigers prior to the 2012 season (contract runs through the 2020 season).
Ian Kinsler is in the second year of a 5-year/$75M contract that he signed with the Rangers prior to the 2013 season (contract runs through the 2017 season with a option for 2018 [$5M buyout]).
The trade works out well for both organizations. The Tigers have an opportunity to sign reigning Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer who is a free agent at the end of the 2014 season to a contract extension and/or extend the contract of reigning two time Most Valuable Player Miguel Cabrera whose current contract expires after the 2015 season. Trading Fielder will also move Miguel Cabrera back to first base and open up third base for prospect Nick Castellanos (Baseball America’s #21 rated prospect prior to 2013).
The Rangers have had a log jam in their middle infield with Elvis Andrus at shortstop and Ian Kinsler at second base leaving young phenom Jurackson Profar without a position. Moving Kinsler now frees up second base for Profar and provides the Rangers with the middle of the order bat that the team needs.Detroit Tigers And Texas Rangers On Verge Of Winters First Blockbuster Deal by Steve Kinsella
