Chandler Parsons Discusses Howard Acquisition

Houston Rockets F Chandler Parsons, a frequent guest on The David Baumann Show, spoke with Baumann within hours of returning to his Orlando home after a 10-day trip to Cabo. Upon his return, Parsons has found the Rockets roster re-shaped and re-tooled, one that he helped mold by recruiting Dwight Howard to join forces in Houston. “Facts are facts, we were the best fit for him,” Parsons told Sports Talk Florida. “We got a chance to win immediately with Coach McHale and James (Harden) and our core nucleus. I think it’d be pretty hard to turn down. I think Dwight made the right decision.”

Parsons said the Rockets might not be done shuffling the roster. “Knowing Daryl Morey, I’m sure we’re not done and we’ll continue to add pieces to make us even more of a championship contender.”

Dwight Howard’s image took a significant hit after departing both Orlando and Los Angeles within an 11-month window, however, Parsons said Howard can reestablish his original likable, happy-go-lucky brand to the Houston market. “Anybody that knows Dwight personally, he’s a big kid. He’s fun, he’s loving, he’s caring, he’s a normal guy and I think the media has been hard on him and last year was a mess in L.A… I think slowly, but surely he can salvage his image back and I think Houston is the perfect city for that. The people love the Rockets there. There’s no pressure. Our network is great and has our back completely and I think that he made the right decision and slowly, but surely his image will turn around because you can’t say much when we’re winning and we’re going to do a lot of that.”

Parsons, a 2nd-round pick (38th overall) in the 2011 NBA Draft, originally signed a four-year, $3.6M contract. While the Rockets have already “picked up” the option on his third season, Houston has not announced whether it plans to pick up the fourth-year team option. A source has indicated to Sports Talk Florida that the Rockets passed on free agent F Josh Smith, now of the Detroit Pistons, in part, to have the financial flexibility in order to extend Parsons as soon as next season. “I’m sure that will come someday,” said Parsons. “The Rockets organization knows what they’re doing and obviously my contract right now, I’ve outplayed it. I’m sure I’ll get taken care of soon.”

“Really that is out of my control,” Parsons said, after he was asked how quickly a new contract can be worked out. “I let my agent (Dan Fegan) take care of it. I let the management of the Rockets handle that. I’m just worried about playing and getting better and I know financially, everything will work itself out.”

There is the possibility that the Rockets choose to reward Parsons with a new multi-year deal in 2014.  The 6’9″ forward averaged 15.5 PPG, 5.3 RPG and 3.5 AST in 76 starts last season and didn’t shy away from the bright lights of the postseason. He picked his averages up to 18.2 PPG, 6.5 RPG and 3.7 AST in the six-game playoff series against the Oklahoma City Thunder. Parsons’ work for the franchise didn’t stop there. He is credited for playing a key role in helping recruit the 7-time All-Star Dwight Howard to Houston this offseason and isn’t that alone, worth a pay raise?

The David Baumann Show airs Monday through Friday from 6-9a from the Sports Talk Florida Studios.
