Cy Young For Price, Not So Fast

Tampa Bay Rays’ starting pitcher David Price has put together one of the best statistical seasons in Rays history. Price is the first Rays’ pitcher to win 20-games and he leads Major League Baseball with the lowest ERA (2.56). In 31 games, Price has a 20-5 record with two complete games and one shutout. He ranks sixth in strikeouts with 205 and opponents are batting .226 against him. With the Rays falling out of playoff contention so might Price’s chance of winning the American League Cy Young Award.
The Detroit Tigers yesterday clinched a division title and Justin Verlander has pitched more innings (238.1) than any other pitch in the AL. Statistically Verlander has carried the Tigers into the postseason. Verlander has a 17-8 record with six complete games with one shutout. Where Verlander makes a case for the Cy Young is his dominance, he leads MLB in strikeouts with 239.
The Los Angeles Angels were also eliminated from the playoffs yesterday. The Angels are the under achieving team of the season but Jered Weaver has put together another strong season with a 20-4 record with three complete games and two shutouts. His ERA is 2.73 but he has held opposing batters to a .213 batting average. Due to injury Weaver has also pitched fewer games than Price or Verlander.
Price, Verlander and Weaver all make a solid case for the Cy Young. There should be a long debate over the winner. Over the last 30-day: Price (4-0, 2.68 ERA), Verlander (5-1, 1.93 ERA), Weaver (4-1, 2.20 ERA).Cy Young For Price, Not So Fast by Matthew Sardo
