Cubs To Promote Star Prospect Javier Baez
The Cubs will promote star infield prospect Javier Baez in time for tomorrow’s game against the Rockies at Coors Field, Bruce Levine of 670TheScore.com reports. The club will still have to make corresponding moves its 25 and 40-man rosters.
Originally drafted ninth overall in the 2011 draft, Baez is a consensus top-10 prospect in the game. He is ranked #5 in all of Major League Baseball and second behind Kris Bryant in the Cubs organization, according to MLB.com.
The 21-year-old impressed during Spring training, and even though he got off to a slow start with Triple-A Iowa, he has turned things around and owns a .260/.323/.510 line with 23 home runs in 434 plate appearances with Triple-A.
With Darwin Barney traded to the Dodgers and Starlin Castro pretty well enshrined at the shortstop position, it seems likely that Javier Baez will land at second base for his Major League debut. Baez is a natural shortstop but has seen playing time at second during his time at Triple-A.
