Amid all of the Opening Day talk and starter competition, the Rays made roster cuts following the Thursday night matchup with the Minnesota Twins. So who did they cut?
Justin Christian, Jerry Sands, Cole Figueroa, Ali Solis, Steve Geltz, Juan Sandoval, Adam Liberatore, and Brad Boxberger were all re-assigned to Minor League camp.
Despite the leave of all these players, manager Joe Maddon is staying positive and remains impressed with the talent of his current roster. He’s also impressed by his 30 plus players in camp.
It seems that Maddon knows what he’s doing and sending that many players away right before Opening Day is something that needed to be done. With the competition for one last starter, it’s more cutthroat than ever. Maddon sees what he sees and he is confident with the roster he has made thus far.
The competition for the fifth spot in the starting rotation is still ongoing but reports say that fans can expect a decision as early as Saturday. There are still three remaining options for the Rays in Jake Odorizzi, Erik Bedard, and Cesar Ramos.
