Jose Fernandez

Jose Fernandez has been announced as the opening days starter for the Miami Marlins. Fernandez is only 21 years old and was named the right-hander NL Rookie of the Year and will be the youngest opening day starter since Felix Hernandez in 2007 for the Mariners.

The last pitcher to start opening day at 21 was Dwight Gooden for the Mets in 1986.

The Marlins lost 100 games last season and it was their first time losing that many games since 1998. Since then, they’ve worked hard to re-evaluate and assemble a strong group of talent.

This season, Miami hopes to change their last season ranking of being last in the NL so there is obviously plenty of room for improvement.

Fernandez is coming off of an impressive rookie season and looks to be a frontline ace for the team.

The Marlins’ spring training games continue Tuesday afternoon as they face the Minnesota Twins at home in Jupiter, FL.
