Countdown to Opening Day: Luke Hochevar to Have Tommy John Surgery
With spring training workouts and games sometimes comes unfortunate injuries. This afternoon, bad news came from Kansas City as one Royals’ star found out he will need Tommy John surgery.
Luke Hochevar had a slight twinge in his elbow earlier this week. The next day, he felt soreness and knew something was wrong. An MRI revealed strained muscled around the elbow, resulting in the need for surgery.
Being that Hochevar is eligible for free agency this fall, it’s possible that pitching in these spring training games over the past few weeks, were his last.
This injury comes at a terrible time since he recently had the best year in his career. According to The Kansas City Star, Hochevar recognizes that his career could be over.
“You get locked into the process of building an organization. And then it’s like ‘Wow, it might over’. Or it may go on for another six years. You don’t know. You don’t know what going to happen. But it is kind of crazy.”
Luckily, Hochevar has been receiving plenty of encouragement from fellow players who have experience what he’s going through. Danny Duffy need UCL surgery two years ago so he’s been able to sympathize with him.
This decision to have surgery means that the Royals will open the season without a threat in the bullpen.
