Could Brett Gardner Be Traded?

Yankees_Brett_Gardner_2The Yankees recently signedJacoby EllsburyandCarlos Beltran, and haveAlfonso Soriano,Ichiro Suzuki,Vernon Wells, and of course, Gardner on the roster as well, so a trade is worth discussing with a surplus of outfielders and the Yankees glaring need for starting pitching.

Peter Gammonsreports that at least a half-dozen teamsincluding the Tigers and Phillieshave inquired about Gardner.

However, Gammons also reported that general managerBrian Cashmanwont trade Gardner until and unless he has to for starting pitching. The Yankees should be aggressive in signing international superstarMasahiro Tanaka, and if they miss out on him, are likely to be in onMatt Garza,Ubaldo Jimenez, andBronson Arroyo, so a need for starting pitching may never arise.

The Yankees also reportedly turned down a Gardner-for-Brandon Phillipstrade last month, so its clear they arent eager to move him.

But if they do make him available, its even more clear theyll have plenty of suitors.
