In the inaugural American Athletic Conference Championships, the No. 10 seed University of South Florida will face No. 7 seed Rutgers in the first round Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET.
The Bulls (12-19, 3-15) enter the four-day event at FedExForum in Memphis after dropping their season finale, 66-65 on Saturday to Temple. The Scarlet Knights (11-20, 3-13) are coming off a 70-66 loss to Cincinnati. The winner will face No. 2 seed and nationally ranked (5th) Louisville on Thursday at 3 p.m. on ESPNU.
Senior Victor Rudd (Los Angeles) leads the team with 15.9 points per game and has averaged 21.0 points over the past six games. Rudd also leads the Bulls in rebounding with 6.8 per game including an average of 7.8 over the past six games. He needs one point to move into the top 10 in career scoring at USF.
Freshmen John Egbunu and Chris Perry are enjoying standout seasons as rookies. Egbunu (Nigeria) needs five rebounds to tie B.B. Walton (197) for the most rebounds in a season for a freshman at USF. His 6.2 rebounds ranks first among conference freshmen.
Perry (Bartow) is a five-time recipient of the American Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week and ranks second among conference freshmen in scoring at 8.8 points per game.
