We are less than 80 days away from the start of college football season and while fans get excited for tailgates and touchdowns, analysts are predicting top teams and ranking them by skill.
In the state of Florida, the obvious powerhouse is Florida State. Something that may surprise some is who sits at the No. 2 spot.
According to ESPN’s College Football Live, the UCF Knights are the second best college football team in the state. With the Knights a candidate for the Big 12 conference, there is a lot for the team to brag about this early on.
ESPN’s Chris Cotter points out that Central Florida has had three 10-plus winning seasons out of the last four. Coach George O’Leary has a lot to do with that and he has created an incredible sense of stability there.
It’s crazy to think how much this program has evolved over the years. Just 10 years ago, it was hard to get fans to go to games and if you told anyone living in Orlando that they would eventually rank in the top 5, above Miami and Florida, they would think you were nuts.
But, with this high ranking, they will have to go out and prove that they can survive without QB Blake Bortles and running back Storm Johnson. It’s a tough college football world out there and they don’t have their star players to lead the way this year.
The times have surely changed and one piece of evidence to prove that is the fact that the Gators are sinking slowly into the depths of football failure. But, they are still ranked at No. 3, above the Hurricanes.
At No. 4, the Miami Hurricanes sit and I’m sure they aren’t too happy to be below the orange and blue. Coach Al Golden has shown some promising signs of improvement this spring, but there’s no guarantee for a true comeback season.
The USF Bulls are at No. 5 on this list and they will likely stay at the bottom throughout the season. In fact, they rank at the bottom of national rankings, too.
