The Knights opened the season with 4 players on suspension, a little sloppy but prevailed with 74-61 win over St Thomas at the UCF Arena. UCF open the season without Marcus Jordan, Josh Crittle, PJ Gaynor who are all suspended due to team violations while AJ Rompza remains out due to NCAA eligibility questions from his relationship with Ken Caldwell. The Knights were sloppy with 20 turnovers in the game and let St Thomas hang around as St Thomas was within 5 points more then halfway into 2nd half.
I think any time you got four players sitting over there on the bench that are possibly starters, you take one out [of] your lineup, that changes it,” UCF Basketball Coach Donnie Jones said. “You take two out, that makes it really difficult” The Knights started junior transfer Tristan Spurlock along with freshman Rod Days who both produced double figure points with Days scoring 14 points and Spurlock adding 12. “It felt good,” Spurlock said of making his UCF debut after sitting last season due to transferring from Virginia. “I know I still have some rust to get off and a couple of things that I need to work on. But it felt good to be out there, finally playing.” Spur
Junior forward Keith Clanton led the Knights with 18 points, five rebounds and six blocks. Sophomore Issiah Sykes got the start at point guard added 15 points and 6 assts but also turn the ball over six times in the game.
The Competition level goes way up for Knights as they now travel to Tallahassee to take on Florida State Monday Night at 7pm.
