TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Second-ranked Florida State (12-2) heads south for the second straight week, this time with a stop in Orlando and a two-game, mid-week series against UCF (7-9) beginning Tuesday, March 11 on Jay Bergman Field.
FSU leads the all-time series 26-5 including a mark of 5-2 on UCF’s home turf. This week marks just the sixth time FSU will visit UCF since the series started in 1985. The two schools have now faced off during the regular season in each of the last four years.
The Seminoles have won the last six games in the series and three in a row over the Knights in Orlando. Prior to the 2011 series in Tallahassee, the two schools had not met during the regular season since March 10, 1993. The eight meetings between 1997 and 2004 all occurred in an NCAA Regional played in Tallahassee.
Since the resumption of the series in 2011, five of the eight games have been decided by four runs or less including three one-run games – all wins for FSU.
FSU and UCF last met in Orlando for a two-game, mid-week series back in 2012 as both games were one-run victories for the Noles. In game one, FSU stormed back after being down four runs scoring all seven runs in the top of the sixth and then hung on for the 7-6 victory. In game two, Jayce Boyd hit a fourth inning solo home run and Scott Sitz (5.0 scoreless) and three other pitchers combined for the five-hit shutout in a 1-0 victory.
Last year, FSU swept the three-game series in Tallahassee outscoring UCF 15-7. Games one and three were decided by two runs or less. Florida State won Sunday’s series finale in walk-off fashion scoring three runs in the ninth capped by Stephen McGee’s RBI single to straight away centerfield.
When FSU faces UCF this week it will mark the final school that the Seminoles will face during the regular season from the newly formed American Athletic Conference (AAC). Florida State faced USF last week sweeping the two-game mid-week series from the Bulls in Tampa. FSU outscored USF 9-2 in the series. Florida State owns an all-time record of 177-41 against the AAC with the most wins against USF (70).
Senior right hander Peter Miller will make his third start of the season on Tuesday. Miller will look to build off his last start at USF in which the senior right hander delivered a dominating performance striking out a career-high 11 batters in 5.0 innings of work. He struck out at least two batters in every inning he pitched while striking out the side in the third. Miller gave up one run on four hits as he walked two.
The Lutz, Fla., native will be making his first career start against UCF. Miller is 12-4 with a 3.92 ERA in 34 career appearances for the Seminoles over four years.
Florida State has yet to announce a starter for Wednesday.
