The key match up in the Knights’ season opener tonight will be how well Akron’s new starting QB, Sophomore Kyle Pohl, fares against UCF’s new-look secondary.
This will be a battle of new faces in new places. Sophomore, Kyle Pohl, will start his first game at the collegiate level. He will be replacing Dalton Williams who played pretty well for the quarterback of a one-win team. After appearing in six games last year as a backup, Pohl finished the season completing 38-of-58 passing for 366 yards and five touchdowns. But now he will be asked to take every snap in an offense that ranked fifth nationally in pass attempts per game in 2012. The Zips love to air it out and Pohl will be asked to throw efficiently and often.
Meanwhile the Knights will be breaking in some new talent of their own. The new-look secondary will feature redshirt freshman Jacoby Glenn making his first start for the Knights. Jordan Ozerites will be asked to step up as a full time starter and Brandon Alexander will have to pick up his new position quickly as he transfers from cornerback to safety this season. Clayton Geathers has the most experience at his position and will need to lead by example.
