TAMU-Bama, UCF Steps Up and the Scary SEC (Picks)

It’s time to make those picks for the week.

Last Week: 11-3
Season: 24-6

Most pundits have been pointing out this week as the week that college football’s bad boy, Johnny Manziel, finally gets his comeuppance. But to expect an Alabama walkover is to completely discount what kind of effort Texas A&M put together in last year’s 29-24 upset. Most notably it’s the belief that Manziel got lucky instead of appreciating the several clutch throws he made at crunch time. Well he’s a better passer now than he was last year and that alone will keep the Aggies close. However, Alabama’s offensive line will get it right and win.

Alabama 33, Texas A&M 24

UCF has rolled through a two-week “JV” schedule of a 1-11 Akron squad and an FIU squad that might be lucky to go 1-11 this year. Things get considerably tougher this weekend when the Knights travel to Happy Valley. The Nittany Lions have arguably the nation’s top true freshman quarterback in Christian Hackenberg and Bill O’Brien is already among the best coaches around. Still I like the Knights because of their balance on offense will keep Hackenberg off the field and wear down the thinning Penn State roster.

UCF 28, Penn State 21

Give Tennessee credit, unlike most of their conference brethren, the Volunteers aren’t afraid to a take a challenge and travel out west. Oregon offensive lineman Jake Fisher even gave the Volunteers a little bulletin board material to laugh at. As big as scary as the SEC can be, Oregon remembers its battle with Auburn and the Ducks have added big and scary to their team’s speed and sweet uniforms.

Oregon 45, Tennessee 34
