USF News: Taggart names White starting QB

The battle between Mike White and Steven Bench to be chosen as USF’s starting quarterback for the 2014 season has come to a halt.

Head coach Willie Taggart announced in a team meeting on Sunday night that White will be the starting quarterback for the Bulls’ 2014 season opener on August 30 against FCS West Carolina. The decision was then released to the public via the team’s Twitter.

Last season, sophomore White saw action in six games and started the Bulls’ final five, completing 53 percent of his passes for 1,083 yards, three touchdowns and nine interceptions.

Though he had an uneven season as a true freshman, he had the best debut in the program’s history, throwing for 311 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in a loss at Houston. Bench, junior and former Penn State transfer, played in seven of the Bulls’ games and started two.
