NFL Draft Player Profile: Anthony Barr, UCLA

Anthony Barr

Profiling this outside linebacker from UCLA is easy to do because of the impact he made on the Bruins in college.

Anthony Barr is 6’4″, 235 lbs of strength, agility, and athleticism. In college, the coaching staff moving Barr from fullback to outside linebacker. This move turned out to be one of the best coaching moves in college football last year. The Bruins had one of the best pass-rushers in the nation who was simply a terror on the field.

Last year on defense, he dominated the Pac-12, recording 13 sacks, 83 tackles, 21.5 tackles for a loss, five passes batted and four forced fumbles. Barr’s sack total was the second largest in the nation.

He finished the regular season well with 1.5 sacks against Stanford in the Pac-12 Championship Game. A few weeks earlier, Barr ended Matt Barkley’s collegiate career with a devastating hit on a sack against USC. When Barr wasn’t tackling the quarterback, he was getting consistent pressure on the signal-caller and doing damage in the ground game.

2014 NFL Draft Expectations:

Barr’s natural pass-rush ability and his clean explosiveness off the edge make him seem like a potential high-first-round pick. If he can get stronger and improve his run defense while continuing to get after the quarterback, he could solidify himself as a top-10 pick.

Barr even told Fox Sports that he should be the number 1 pick.

“Absolutely,” Barr told when asked if he should be the No. 1 overall pick. “I think I am the complete package. I can help a team right away win football games, playoff games and championships. It’s something that I always dreamed about. The teams that do pass on me will regret it.”

“I’m going to let my play do the talking. I’m not going to say much or act out in any type of way but when I get on the field, those teams that do pass on me, it’ll always weigh on me and make me have a chip on my shoulder.”

Barr will need some work dropping in pass coverage, but looks like a natural as a standup edge-rusher. In a 4-3 defense, Barr should be an outside linebacker in a role like Von Miller with the Broncos.
