When the Hurricanes and the Owls meet to open their seasons on Friday night, it will be a tribute of sorts to Howard Schnellenberger — the man who got Miami into the spotlight by leading the school to its first national championship in 1983, a decade and a half before he laid the first seeds for what the Florida Atlantic program would become.
Many of the players who were on that first Miami title team are coming back to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Hurricanes’ stunner over Nebraska. And FAU coach Carl Pelini says he’s trying to emulate what Schnellenberger did when he turned Miami into a consistent winner.
