CORAL GABLES, Fla. – Four Miami Hurricanes will play in postseason college all-star games Saturday. Allen Hurns will play in the 2014 East-West Shrine Game in St. Petersburg, while AJ Highsmith, Jared Wheeler and David Gilbert will play in the 2014 NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in Carson, Calif.
The East-West Shrine Game (@Shrine_Game), held at Tropicana Field, will kick at 4 p.m. ET on NFL Network; the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl (@NFLPABowl), which is played at StubHub Center, will kick at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN.
Hurns, who was a second-team All-ACC selection by both ACSMA and the league’s head coaches, set the Miami single-season record in 2013 with 1,162 receiving yards. He became only the fourth player with a 1,000-yard receiving season in school history, joining Eddie Brown, Andre Johnson and Leonard Hankerson. He finished his career seventh in school history with 121 receptions and 1,891 yards.
Highsmith played in all 13 games in 2013 at safety, making four starts. He registered 23 tackles, one INT and three PBUs. He concluded his career with 67 total tackles and a pair of interceptions.
Wheeler made six starts on the offensive line at three different positions – one at left guard, two at center and three at right guard. Wheeler helped anchor Miami’s offensive line that paved the way for the offense that averaged 425.8 yards of total offense and 33.8 points per game.
A preseason transfer from Wisconsin, Gilbert played in 12 games along the defensive line, recording 10 tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss. In Miami’s home finale, he returned a fumble 72 yards for a TD against the Virginia Cavaliers.
