Vernon Hargreaves III Showcases His Burning Desire To Be Great

One thing was made clear at the 2014 SEC Media Days, Florida’s standout sophomore All-American Vernon Hargreaves III is unlike any other sophomore. Hargreaves may be one of the best cornerbacks in the nation, but more importantly he’s an outstanding person – an athlete who’s very rare to come across.

Hargreaves may only be 19 years old, but he’s poised, mature, and carries himself like veteran. Head coach Will Muschamp describes VH3 as the “whole package” and says he continuously exceeds his expectations both on and off the field.

“He’s a guy that’s got a burning desire to be really, really good. He’s in the film room constantly. He’s correcting himself. All the intangible things you want a player to be he possesses. God blessed him with a lot of ability. At the end of the day he has some of the natural instincts that others of us don’t have.”

VH3 began his collegiate career the summer of 2013 as a 5 star cornerback ranked No. 1 nationally. The Wharton High School product embraced the opportunity to play for the country’s toughest conference and began his freshman campaign snatching three interceptions in his first four games. He finished his first season with the Gators recording 38 tackles and 11 pass breakups – becoming one of the most talented freshmen in college football. Muschamp also took a moment to praise Hargreaves on his phenomenal year.

“In the secondary we’re led by Vernon Hargreaves who had an outstanding freshman year, a guy who came in and earned his opportunity.  He’s a joy to recruit in the recruiting process.  He never asked me about depth charts or anything.  He only asked for an opportunity to play.  If he had that opportunity, he’d be a starter.  His first two games in the Southeastern Conference, he had two interceptions.  That tells you the type of player he is. Outstanding young man, represents us in all the right ways.”

His success and ability to exceed all expectations of a true freshmen may come to a surprise to many, but not to Muschamp or his father and longtime college football coach, Vernon Hargreaves II. Hargeaves II says it’s hard to describe the passion and love his son has for football. Muschamp agrees and says the game just comes natural to him, “He has alot of natural instincts for the game and is a quick learner. You take the God given ability and mix that with all the intangible things that he does extremely well – that’s why he’s a really great football player.”

So, what’s next for VH3?

With less than 50 days until the college football season kicks off, a new season and a fresh start awaits Hargreaves and the Gators. Now entering his second season,  Hargreaves is set to be the leader of the secondary which means the future NFL prospect in waiting will embrace this new set of expectations and help Florida bounce back from last year and redeem themselves.

One thing is certain, if this season is anything like his first – you can expect this star to shine and be a big time playmaker this fall.
