In Gainesville, two of the three Golden Spikes Award finalists will be on the field when the Florida Gators host the North Carolina State Wolfpack on Saturday. The Gators, who are the number one overall seed in the tournament will go against the Wolfpack’s ace freshman pitcher Carlos Rodon (9-0, 1.61 ERA). Rodon is the first ever freshman to win ACC Pitcher of the Year and ranks third in the nation with 132 strikeouts. The lefty freshman will go up against a Florida offense led by catcher Mike Zunino (.316 BA, 18 HRs, 60 RBI) who has had a big week already. Zunino was also selected third overall in MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners.
The Gators have great pitching themselves with Hudson Randall, who was selected in the seventh round of the draft by the Detroit Tigers, projected to get the start in Saturday’s game one and Brian Johnson, another Gator first rounder, starting in game 2. In total, the Gators had nine players selected in the MLB Draft. Florida is hoping to advance to the College World Series for the third straight season if they can get past the Wolfpack.
