Gator Made: Patric Young’s Journey To The NBA

Ever since former Florida Gators center Patric Young fell in love with the game of basketball at a very young age, his lifelong dream has been to play in the NBA.

The 6-foot-10, 247 pound Jacksonville native, best know for his passion, intelligence, phenomenal work ethic, and being one of the most outstanding student athletes in the history of the Florida basketball program isn’t going to let anything stop him from reaching his goals and making his dream a reality.

Growing up, the three-time Scholar Athlete of the Year was always admired for his strong Greek God-like physique and soft heart. The type of athlete you would find practicing until 1 a.m. on a Saturday night, or catch worshiping in the church choir on Sunday mornings in Gainesville.

Throughout Young’s four years at the University of Florida, he becamse one of the most phenomenal low-post defenders,  and one of the most dominant frontcourt players in the SEC. During his senior campaign, Young averaged 11 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game and was the 2014 SEC Defensive Player of the Year. Young also helped lead the senior class to 120 wins –  the most wins of any class in UF history, as well as three SEC championships.

Young finished his career as a Florida Gator with 1,300 points, 800 rebounds, a Final Four appearance in April under head coach Billy Donovan, as well as a degree in Telecommunications from the College of Journalism and Communications.

Projected as a likely second-round pick, Young was one of 60 players to participate in the 2014 NBA Draft Combine in Chicago, Illinois. Young was put through a series of tests and drills, and spent his spare time interviewing with teams. The Florida product had a strong showing and impressive performance at the Combine, making the most of the experience. Young bench pressed 185 pounds 25 straight times and measured at 6-foot-10 without shoes.

The former Gator has shut down his Twitter account as he readies himself for the NBA Draft on June 26th. In the meantime, Florida’s big man has been working out and preparing for the draft at IMG Academy in Bradenton and represented by his agent Jim Tanner of Tandem Sports.

22-year-old Young, has dreamed of this once in a lifetime opportunity for years, and plans to make the most of every minute of the experience he’s worked so hard to pursue.
