Florida State  Asst Head Coach Mike Martin Jr :

Florida State has four very experienced, accomplished, reliable starters that may be among the best in College Baseball, led by a bona fide ace in junior Luke Weaver.  Weaver  will get the ball on the season opening night (Feb 14) against Niagara has a chance to be drafted in the top half of the first round of the MLB Draft coming up later in the year.  Brandon Leibrandt  who is the son of former MLB pitcher Charlie Liebrandt will be on the weekend rotation as well as is  Mike Compton who returns to the rotation after missing last year with having Tommy John surgery. Senior  Peter Miller will start the year starting in the midweeks as a number 4 starter.Seminoles_Jameis_Winston_2014

As Mike Martin Jr said,  Jameis Winston is the favorite to  be the new closer.  Winston according to Baseball America  has good sink and arm-side run on an 87-91 fastball that touches higher, good feel for his slider and an occasional changeup. Winston had an era of 3.00 with 21 strikesouts in 27 innings pitched in his freshman season.  Winston also will still play RF and DH this season as Winston is a switch hitter who hit 235 last year and has no restrictions on playing time according to Martin.

Notable dates for a chance to see Winston and the  Seminoles during season will include hosting the  Miami Hurricanes on weekend of February 28- March 2 in a series that will not count towards the ACC Standings.  FSU travels to Tampa on March 4 and 5 to take on USF. The Noles will play in Orlando against UCF on March 11-12. Winston and the Noles will return to Central Florida on May 6th when the Noles take on Stetson in Deland.
