TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – The Florida State men’s basketball team, which is the third winningest program in the ACC in the last nine seasons, will play in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic and the MetroPCS Orange Bowl Classic during the 2014-15 season as the Seminoles’ schedule begins to take shape.
Florida State will play four games as participants in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic. The Seminoles will play host to Manhattan on November 15 and Northeastern on November 18. Both of those games will be played in the newly renovated Donald L. Tucker Center. The Seminoles will then play Providence (2014 NCAA Tournament participant) on November 22 and UMass (2014 NCAA Tournament participant) on November 23 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.
North Carolina defeated Louisville to win the 2013 Naismith Memorial Basketball Tip-Off Classic Championship in 2013. Previous winners of the event are Kentucky in 2011 and Ohio State in 2012.
The Seminoles will play USF in the MetroPCS Orange Bowl Classic on December 20, 2014 at the BB&T Center in Sunrise, Fla. It marks the second consecutive year and sixth overall appearance in the Orange Bowl Classic for the Seminoles who defeated No. 20 UMass in the event last season. The Florida State vs. USF game will be played as part of a doubleheader with Florida and Wake Forest playing in the other game. The order of the games will be determined at a later date.
Florida State and USF will meet for the 33rd time with the Seminoles holding a 20-12 edge and wins in nine of the last 15 games played between the two teams. The two teams met most recently on Nov. 18, 2007 at the Glenn Wilkes Classic in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Florida State owns a 4-1 record in five previous Orange Bowl Classic games and enters the 2014 event having won four consecutive games. The Seminoles have earned consecutive wins over Nebraska (December 31, 2005), Western Kentucky (December 28, 2008), Tulsa (December 29, 2012) and UMass (December 21, 2013). The Seminoles’ victory over UMass was one of two victories over a nationally ranked team during the 2013-14 season and helped the Seminoles earn a No. 1 seed in the 2014 NIT.
