Cobb Returns, Rays Defeat Mariners 7-1

The Rays won the rubber game of their series with the Seattle Mariners by a final score of 7-1. The victory improves the Rays record to 68-51 and with the victory they are now 2-games out of first as the Boston Red Sox lost to the Toronto Blue Jays 2-1.

Alex Cobb (7-2, 2.94 ERA) returned to the mound for the first time since being struck by a line drive off the bat of Eric Hosmer on the Kansas City Royals on June 15th.

He was impressive in his return going 5 innings allowing 1R/ER on 3 hits while striking out 6 and walking 2. The only mistake he made was deposited in the right field stands off the bat off Raul Ibanez.

The only time he ran into trouble was in his final frame of work where he allowed a ground rule double (on what was a foul ball) and then issued back to back walk to load the bases with 2-outs but came back to strike out Nick Franklin to end the inning.

With the game tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth the Rays offense broke out and put up 4 runs on a 2-RBI double by Wil Myers and a 2-run home run by Evan Longoria.

Alex Torres worked a scoreless 6th inning, Jamey Wright held the Mariners scoreless in both the 7th and 8th inning, and Wesley Wright worked a scoreless 9th. Overall the trio of relievers worked 4 scoreless innings allowing 2 hits striking out 4 and walking 2.

Sean Rodriguez, Wil Myers, Evan Longoria, and Yunel Escobar all had multi-hit games with Wil Myers leading the way with 3 hits including two doubles, four ?RBI, two runs scored, and he reached on a hit by pitch as well.

Evan Longoria hit his 23rd home run on the season.
