Cleveland Indians Pull A “Joe Maddon” With Rally Chicken
The Cleveland Indians are targeting a playoff spot for the first time since 2007 and in order to make fun of teammate Cody Allen whose nickname is “Chicken Al” as well as to cut through some of the tension that comes with September baseball Indians pitcher Justin Masterson let loose a live chicken onto Progressive Field during batting practice.
Rays manager Joe Maddon will often surprise his players with locker room shenanigans such as having a DJ spinning tunes, a magician, penguins roaming, a cockatoo, live Meringue band, and most recently a 20-foot python.
For the Cleveland Indians the horseplay on the field had to be a tedious moment for manager Terry Francona whose tenure with the Boston Red Sox came to a tumultuous end after it was reported that players were eating fried chicken, drinking beer, and playing video games during games as the team completed one of baseballs most historic collapses.
Francona did not seem to mind the chicken stunt pulled by his players saying:
“I actually love it, They’re trying to have fun, and that’s the best way to be a good team. It doesn’t mean we’re not taking what we’re doing seriously, because we really do. But yeah, I think it’s a good way to come to the ballpark laughing. It’s a good atmosphere.” -mlb.com
The Indians went out and defeated the Baltimore Orioles to remain 3.5 games out of a wild card spot. The Chicken has officially been named by Twitter influence as the “rally chicken” and doesn’t appear to be going anywhere.
After the game outfielder Ryan Raburn said:
“We’re going to have to get him his own locker, I guess, He was in here after the game. Everybody had to give him high-fives. If we keep rolling, he’s going to be here a while.” -mlb.com
25 years after a live chicken was requested in the movie Major League the Indians Rally Chicken has finally arrived.
The west coast may has the Rally Monkey and straight out of a Hollywood script comes the Rally Chicken to the shores of Lake Erie.
