Chris Archer Ready To Take On Tribe, Lineups Posted
The Cleveland Indians drafted Chris Archer in the 5th round of the 2006 draft but traded him to the Chicago Cubs on New Years Eve Day in 2008. Today Archer returns to Cleveland for the first time since signing his first professional contract in 2006 and told Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times that "he always ?envisioned himself playing here and to come back and actually play on the other side is pretty cool, just to maybe show them what they're missing out on."
Tommy Rancel of the Process Report takes a look at Chris Archer and suggests that for Archer to be successful he will have to command his fastball but also have an effective 3rd pitch. Rancel doesn't believe that the pitch has to be a dominant change up, "Archer does not need a plus changeup to be successful. He needs one that is good enough to earn respect from the opposition."
Archer's season with the Triple A Durham Bulls has been interrupted twice by line drives off his body but he has overcome the bumps and bruises and he feels everything is back in order. With the Bulls Archer was 5-3 with a 3.94 ERA and had struck out 52 and walked 23 in 50 innings of work. He has also had a slight problem keeping the ball in the park allowing 6 HR.
His last start came was a loss against the New York Yankees Triple-A affiliate Scranton Wilkes-Barre Rail Riders on Sunday. He went 5 innings allowing 4R/2ER on 5 hits striking out 6 and walking 3.
Archer isn't the only new face the Rays will have on the roster this afternoon as Alex Torres will replace Josh Leuke in the bullpen. It will be Torres second stint with the team this season. During his first stint he made two appearances including a very impressive 4 innings of shutout relief against the imposing Baltimore Orioles lineup.
The Rays will take on the Indians Ubaldo Jimenez who has been erratic most of his time with Cleveland but has settled in as of late (sans a start against the Tigers).
The weather forecast medium humidity and partly cloudy skies through the 5 o'clock hour.
