Chelsea legend, Frank Lampard, to join Manchester City on loan
But, in a not all that surprising turn of events, Lampard will not be re-joining Chelsea, but will instead join title rivals Manchester City.
After reports began to circulate late last week, City manager Manuel Pellegrini confirmed the deal had been done following the teams 2-2 draw against Olympiacos.
From next week, Wednesday, he will start working with our team and he will be with us until January, Pellegrini told the media after the match according to BBC Sport. He is working with the squad, he will fight for his position.
Lampard will likely be asked to take some of the weight off of a City midfield that struggled with fitness at times last season.
With the Champions League, Premier League and a cup competition starting before Lampard departs for New York, the Citizens will need the added help in midfield.
The move also brings into question the future of midfielder Javi Garcia at the club. Rumors have been circulating that the Spaniard is being shopped around, with City now having a plethora of central midfielders with Lampard and Fernando joining Fernandinho and Yaya Toure.
Previously, Lampard had stated he would not line up against Chelsea with another Premier League side, but he might be facing off against his former club.
The loan deal is a result of City being the sister club of NYCFC who doesnt start its first preseason until the beginning of 2015. Spanish striker David Villa has completed a similar deal with Melbourne City, only playing with the club until January.
During his time with Chelsea, Lampard helped the team win the Premier League three times, the Champions League once and the FA Cup four times.
City is set to start its season Aug. 10 against Arsenal in the Community Shield, before playing Newcastle the following Sunday to kick off the Premier League. The defending champs will host Chelsea Sept. 21.
