Charlie’s Week 1 Picks Against the Spread

Real games are back and so are real picks. Last season we finished at a phenomenal 61% against the spread and this year we look to improve upon that. Let’s begin with the Week 1 picks:
Tampa Bay -3 vs. New York Jets
The Bucs didn’t look great in the preseason but they still have good talent on both sides of the football. The same can not be said about the Jets and when you throw a rookie quarterback in the mix making his first start the odds turn heavily in Tampa’s favor. Buccaneers 17, Jets 10.
New England -10 vs. Buffalo
The Pats have beaten the Bills 9 of the last 10 times they’ve played and the New England defense is better than many think. After a close start this one turns into blowout city, Patriots 45, Bills 17.
Tennessee +7 vs. Pittsburgh
Are the Steelers back? No, but the Titans will challenge the Jaguars for last place in the AFC South. Pittsburgh takes this one easily, Steelers 28, Titans 13.
Atlanta +3 vs. New Orleans
The Saints have won 6 of their last 7 at home versus the Falcons. New Orleans has something to prove in this one and they will take down the defending NFC South champs, Saints 35, Falcons 31.
Kansas City -4 vs. Jacksonville
The Jaguars will be competitive in this game for a while, but turnovers from the quarterback position will eventually do them in. Chiefs 17, Jaguars 10.
Cincinnati +3 vs. Chicago
Everyone loves the Bengals due in part to their appearance on Hard Knocks and they are a very solid team. The Bears are vastly underrated and win win a close one in their home opener. Bears 21, Bengals 17.
Miami +1 vs. Cleveland
This game will go a long way in determining what kind of start the Dolphins will have and if they’re indeed a playoff contender. Although Cleveland hasn’t been good in a long time, every road game in this league is tough. Miami finds a way to get it done late, Dolphins 17, Browns 14.
Seattle -3.5 vs. Carolina
Upset special!!! Everyone loves the Seahawks and what’s not to love? Seattle has one of the league’s best rosters but they were a very average team on the road for much of last year. Give me a motivated Cam Newton and the Panthers at home straight up, Panthers 24, Seahawks 20.
Minnesota +5.5 vs. Detroit
Trap game! On the surface there’s no good reason why you wouldn’t take the Vikings, a playoff team from last season with 5.5 points against the last-place Lions….But that’s what they want you to do. I’ll take Matt Stafford over Christian Ponder and the Lions cruise, Lions 27, Vikings 17.
Oakland +10 vs. Indianapolis
The Colts don’t have a great roster but the Raiders are simply experimenting with theirs. Terrell Pryor can’t make all the throws and the Oakland starting tackles are Khalif Barnes and Tony Pashos, ouch! Colts 31, Raiders 13.
Arizona +4.5 vs. St. Louis
The Cards have been penciled in as the last place team in the very tough NFC West and that’s probably going to happen. Still, Arizona upgraded their pathetic quarterback situation and has a very solid defense. They will play just well enough to stay inside the number, Rams 17, Cards 13.
Green Bay +4.5 vs. San Francisco
The Packers are a great team and I fully expect them to do great things this year…..just not this week against Colin Kaepernick. Green Bay has to prove that they can stop the pistol and they haven’t to this point. 49ers 34, Packers 24.
New York Giants +3 vs. Dallas
The Giants have never lost in Cowboys Stadium. There’s a first time for everything as Dallas is completely healthy and will exploit a very thin Giants secondary. Cowboys 31, Giants 24.
Philadelphia +3.5 vs. Washington
Most division champs don’t lose their home openers on Monday Night Football….Especially when they’re facing last place teams from the year prior. RG3 will be the story and if he’s just okay the ‘Skins win. If he’s good as I suspect him to be they will win easily. Redskins 27, Eagles 17.
Houston -4 vs. San Diego
The San Diego roster is worse than many people think and one offseason with new general manager Tom Telesco isn’t going to repair it. Houston will get pressure all night long and force Philip Rivers into mistakes. Texans 31, Chargers 14.
