Champ Bailey

Among all the controversy and commercials about the Washington Redskins’ name, another former player for the organization is announcing his disapproval for the name.

A former star cornerback, Champ Bailey spent five seasons in Washington. According to Jarrett Bell, a reporter for USA Today Sports, he is speaking out in favor of a name change for the team. Bailey told USA Today that even though he has adoration for the team, a change must happen soon.

“I don’t know where the name came from or how it came about, but the bottom line is that it’s still here in this day and age, and it makes no sense to have it. I love that organization, but when it starts peeling off old scabs and people are pitching a fit about it because it’s degrading to them, then you’ve got to make a change.”

He makes a valid point. No matter the tradition, where it came from or why, today is what matters most. If it offends people today, it needs to be changed to something different. End of story.

An anti-Redskins ad played during Game 3 of the NBA Finals Tuesday night and some people had something to say about, specifically Miami Heat’s Shane Battier, who shares similar thoughts to those of Bailey’s. According to the Washington Post, he put it very simply.

“If there are Native American tribes who find that term offensive, and they’ve voiced their expression of discontent for the name, I think there should be a move to change it.”

It only seems fair.
