Catchin’ Up: Bucs Weekly Recap for May 26 – June 1

Have some catching up to do when it comes to the Bucs? No worries! Here’s a recap of what you may have missed:
Donald Penn’s weight caused quite a stir, with the Buccaneers left tackle lashing out against accusations that he’s missed weight clauses in his contract .
I joined the David Baumann Show on Tuesday during my regular 7:30 time slot to talk about Donald Penn’s weight and the backlash from those reports .
On Wednesday, league offices announced that the 2014 NFL Draft would be moved two weeks back to May 8-10, avoiding scheduling conflicts at Radio City Music Hall and preserving the venue.
Bucs backup safety Cody Grimm had a pretty rough weekend. Reports surfaced Wednesday that he was arrested at a Hampton Inn in Virginia for public intoxication.
It was Grimm’s second misdemeanor charge in three months. This doesn’t bode well for him in his quest to make the final 53-man roster.
Bucs wide receiver Steve Smith, who signed a free agent contract with the team this offseason, officially called it a career Wednesday.
Smith will best be remembered for his contributions during the Giants’ Super Bowl season in 2007, and then of course, turning down a five-year contract offer worth $35 million, and then suffering a knee injury, after which he was never quite the same.
The two men responsible for prank-calling former Bills general manager Buddy Nix and Bucs general manager Mark Dominik face some pretty hefty charges. They’re expected in court June 4.
Tampa Bay’s return game got a boost this week by signing former Temple running back Matt Brown , who could handle both kickoff and punt return duties.
The irony of Brown’s signing — it almost didn’t happen. He had already agreed to play for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL and was scheduled to fly to Canada on Tuesday to sign a contract.
Brown wasn’t able to make the trip, however, due to an expired passport . His agent was contacted that Tuesday by the Bucs. Now he gets a shot to live out a dream.
In his retirement ceremony, Ronde Barber said that he was ready to begin a career in broadcasting but wouldn’t provide details beyond that.
It looks like Barber will be headed to FOX Sports to serve as an NFL analyst .
As someone who has been part of many Barber post-game interviews, I can say he is one of the most astute and opinionated players I’ve talked to. Fans should be in for a real treat here.
The Bucs are joining the fight against pediatric cancer. Next Friday, General manager Mark Dominik will shave his head in a show of support for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation.
Dominik be joined by other prominent names in the Buccaneers organization, but the Bucs won’t reveal who just yet. Kudos to the organization for supporting a cause that hits close to home for many, many families.
This afternoon at 5:15, I’ll be joining Charlie Bernstein on Sports Talk 1040 to talk more Bucs news and catch you up on the latest in the NFL. You can listen here .
