Did you get behind on some Bucs and NFL news this week? Get caught up here!

The week started off on a somber note when word got out that NFL legend and originator of the sack, Deacon Jones, passed away at the age of 74 [1].

Jones was one of the greatest defensive linemen to every play the game, and it never ceases to amaze me just how many young people out there, not just players but fans, recognize his contributions to the game we’ve all come to love.

Jones actually paid a visit to the Buccaneers back in 2004, just before the start of training camp, and left a lasting impression. He told the team, “There are five things that define a champion: teamwork, hard work, pride, determination and competitive spirit.”

You can read more about his visit with the Buccaneers here [2].

On Tuesday morning, I joined the David Baumann Show for my weekly 7:30 a.m. spot to discuss the impact of Cody Grimm’s arrests [3]have on his future with the team and why Steve Smith decided to retire.

Baumann and I also discussed some of the position battles taking place during OTAs, including the competition for the Bucs at strong-side linebacker [4].

A number of transactions took place this week for the Bucs, including the signing of former USF wide receiver Carlton Mitchell [5], who starred at Gaither High School and was most recently with the Cowboys. He joined the team for OTAs this week.

The Bucs waived former USF tight end Evan Landi and signed kicker Derek Dimke, who gives the team another leg in camp after the retirement of Nate Kaeding.

On Thursday, the team waived second-year guard Desmond Wynn and signed former Miami guard Jeremy Lewis, a rookie.

Also on Thursday, Pro Football Talk revealed its much-anticipated Buccaneers Mount Rushmore [6]: Lee Roy Selmon, Derrick Brooks, Warren Sapp, and Ronde Barber. Hard to argue with those selections, although it feels weird leaving Mike Alstott and John Lynch off.

And last but certainly not least, today several members of the Buccaneers participated in a head-shaving to show support for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation.

GM Mark Dominik also took part. He was a guest this afternoon on the Whitney Johnson Experience and you can listen to that interview here [7].

What do you think of Dominik’s new haircut? Pretty sure Coach Schiano would agree that it’s 99% shaved. (Pic courtesy of the Buccaneers)

The Bucs will have a mandatory three day mini-camp next week. It runs June 11-13. Sports Talk Florida will be out there to give you tons of updates, so stayed tuned for those!
