Andrew Cashner pitched six effective innings and contributed a big hit at the plate, helping the San Diego Padres beat Tim Lincecum and the San Francisco Giants 2-1 on Friday night.
Cashner (1-1) allowed one run and five hits, struck out five and walked one. He retired the last 12 batters he faced, avenging a 2-0 loss to Lincecum and the Giants last Saturday.
Cashner picked up his second major league hit and scored San Diego’s first run in its two-run third inning. He had a leadoff single to center and swiped second with two down before coming home on Chase Headley’s single to right. Headley eventually came home, giving the Padres a 2-1 lead.
