While the Tampa Bay Buccaneers coaching staff saw some encouraging signs on the injury front Monday, not all news coming out of One Buc Place was positive.

Pro Bowl guard Carl Nicks has been suffering from what’s being described as an “infected blister” on the outside of his foot, which forced him to sit out Friday’s preseason game against the Patriots.

“He did a great job up there against New England, practiced almost, I guess, the entire practice against New England. [He] developed a blister not on his toe area but on a different part of his foot, and hence, that blister got infected,” said Bucs head coach Greg Schiano.

The Bucs had planned to play Nicks [2], but 90 minutes before kickoff Friday, it was announced that he’d been scratched. It is the same foot that Nicks underwent toe surgery on.

“We’re treating that like we do everything. [We] take it very seriously. It’s not something you mess around with, but it’s not your common injury either.”

Schiano continued, “So the next question is, ‘How long will he be?’ I don’t know that. We’ve got to let the medicine run its course and see if we can’t get that thing straightened out.”

Despite the setback, Schiano still believes Week 1 is a realistic possibility for Nicks. He did say that due to the unpredictable nature and unusual circumstance of the injury that providing a clear time-table for recovery is challenging.

“It’s an unfortunate set of circumstances but we’re going to get it corrected like everything else and he’s being treated the correct way, I’m confident.”
