Canes Fall to NC State, Out of ACC Tournament

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Rion Brown’s 15th straight double-digit scoring game was not enough for Miami Thursday night, as they fell in the second round of the ACC Tournament to NC State, 67-58.
T.J. Warren scored 24 points for North Carolina State. Ralston Turner added 16 of his 22 points after halftime for the seventh-seeded Wolfpack (20-12), who trailed 53-51 with about 4 minutes left before going on a 12-0 run that kept Mark Gottfried’s team alive in the tournament.
Turner came up big during that spurt. Warren hit a turnaround for the lead at the 2:23 mark, then Turner knocked down a tough 3-pointer over Rion Brown that gave the Wolfpack a 58-53 lead with 1:42 to go.
Davon Reed added 9 points for Miami, a day after scoring 14 in his first tournament appearance. The freshman also added a steal to his stat line. Reed’s three-pointer with 3:52 left in the game gave Miami their first lead of the second half. However, NC State closed the game on a 13-5 run and eliminated the defending champions.
NC State now advances to Friday’s quarterfinals to play No. 11 Syracuse, the tournament’s third seed.
Miami ends the season 17-16 overall, 7-11 in the ACC and 1-1 in the ACC Tournament. Coach Jim Larrañaga ends the season with an overall record od 536-370, and a mark of 66-36 in his three seasons at Miami.
Miami is 11-9 in ACC Tournament play since joining the league for the 2004-05 season. Under head coach Jim Larrañaga, Miami is 5-2 in the ACC Tournament.
Miami has won five of its last seven games in the ACC Tournament and they are 8-4 in tournament games played in Greensboro. Miami is now 7-11 in the all-time series against NC State, 3-4 against the Wolfpack at home, 1-1 at neutral sites and 2-6 on the road. Miami is 1-2 against the Wolfpack this season.
Starters against NC State: Tonye Jekiri, Erik Swoope, Manu Lecomte, Garrius Adams and Rion Brown. Brown hit one 3-pointer against NC State, tying him with Guillermo Diaz’ 174, for No. 7 on Miami’s all-time list of 3-point shots made in a career. Brown has played 136 career games, which is the most in UM history, surpassing Durand Scott, who played in 132 games.
Rion Brown scored in double-figures (22) for the 15th-straight game and 28th time overall this season. Brown scored a personal ACC Tournament career high 22 points, surpassing his previous high of 15 on March 12 against Virginia Tech. Tonye Jekiri grabbed nine rebounds, marking the 17th time with five or more boards.
Raphael Akpejiori scored for the first time since Feb. 19, recording two points, which were his first career points in the ACC Tournament.
Garrius Adams pulled down seven boards, recording 5+ rebounds for the 15th time this year. Adams ends his career with 804 points, 395 rebounds, 197 assists and 113 steals in 120 games. He started 70 games.
Raphael Akpejiori played in 85 games, starting 10, and totaled 97 points, 128 rebounds and 38 blocks. Rion Brown scored 1124 career points, the 28th-most in Miami history. Brown also tallied 423 rebounds, 144 assists and 67 steals in 136 career games, the most ever played by a Hurricane. Brown started 46 games.
Justin Heller played in 21 games as a Hurricane and totaled four points and seven rebounds.
Donnavan Kirk started 31 of his 48 games at Miami, notching 278 points, 184 rebounds and 50 blocks. Erik Swoope recorded 291 points, 186 rebounds, 31 assists, 37 steals and 25 blocks in 110 career games. He started 27 of those outings.
