FSU LT Cam Erving Chose Fifth Year Over NFL

FSU NEWS: Cam Erving Returns

Florida State once again signed a top five recruiting class this year, but their biggest commitment may have come from a player already on campus. Left Tackle Cam Erving decided to return for his senior season instead of leaving early for the draft.

Cam Erving“This is one of those situations that guys go through every day,” Erving said. “This isn’t a  battle that starts after the last game this is something that goes on throughout the whole  season.”

Throughout his junior year Erving looked to those close to him for support as he worked to  make a decision on whether to leave for the NFL or return to FSU.

“Coach Fisher and Coach Trickett, who I work with the closest, they’re the ones I leaned  on,” Erving said, “and my family and I prayed about it and I made a good decision. “

Erving said he made the decision to return to school during the season, but he waited until the team returned from the national championship game in Pasadena to make it official. He met with Head Coach Jimbo Fisher the week after the game and told Fisher that he planned to return.

“I came into Coach Fisher’s office and I talked to him,” Erving said, “and I told him, I said coach I want to come back.”

A converted defensive tackle, Erving has only played on the offensive line for two years. He has caught the attention of pro scouts in that time and was projected as a second round pick this year. Instead Erving chose to come back to college in hopes that another year of experience would move him into the first round.

“I definitely feel like I can get better myself…limiting my mental errors,” Erving said, “not making mistakes because I don’t know what I’m doing, making mistakes because it’s something new that happened to me.”

After coming in as the youngest player in his recruit class Erving will be one of the oldest players on the team.

It’s definitely different being one of the older guys on the team seeing as I was the youngest guy that came in when I was a freshman…I’m enjoying it, embracing it…just trying to go out there and do what I have to do.”

As a red-shirt senior next season Erving will also be expected to step into an expanded leadership on the offensive line. The line was led by center Bryan Stork last season, but he has graduated and is now pursing his own dream of playing in the NFL.

“I’ve never been one of the guys that wanted to talk a lot,” Erving said, “The biggest way I lead is by example.

Florida State returns four of their five starters on the offensive line including Erving as they look to defend their national championship.

“There is something special going on at Florida State,” Erving said, “we just have to go and continue to build on what we’ve built the program up to the last few years.”
