Bulls Have Passionate Practice, Prepare For Spring Game
The USF football team is winding down its spring season but is preparing for their spring game on April 21. With two scrimmages behind them already, coach Skip Holtz says the players and coaches are gearing towards a game-type atmosphere which he expects to be as competitive and emotional as recent practices have been.
The team took the field on Wednesday for its fourteenth practice of the short spring season and Holtz was pleased with what he saw.
?Probably one of the most spirited team sessions we have had,? he said.
Saturday?s spring game will be at 6 p.m. at Raymond James Stadium.
?After watching practice today, it?s got an opportunity to be one heck of a doozy Saturday,? Holtz said.
?It almost turned into a scrimmage out there,? he added. ?Just a lot of jabbering, a lot of emotion, a lot of celebrating, it was a passionate practice, a really positive practice for (day) No. 14.?
Senior quarterback B.J. Daniels couldn?t agree more.
?It was a lot of emotions, a lot of ups and downs,? he said. ?A lot of guys getting after each other, a lot of talking. But you know, like I said, it?ll all make us better in the end.?
What is the goal for the senior quarterback and the offense? Simple.
?Beat up on the defense,? Daniels said with a smirk. Point Blank. Period.?
The offense thrived in last week?s scrimmage scoring 10 touchdowns and according to Holtz, the defense feels like its their turn for the spotlight.
?This is a proud group, they came out there and worked really hard today but you know, the defense feels like they have something to prove. I think they are tired of reading that the offense score 10 touchdowns in the scrimmage on Saturday.?
There will be plenty of 1 vs. 1 and 2 vs. 2 situations but what is also important for the Bulls, according to Holtz, is that the team develops its depth chart in time for summer workouts.
?We?ve got to continue to create our depth, I?ve talked about that,? he said. ?Unfortunately we?ve got a couple of bumps and bruises and a couple of guys that are going to miss it...I mean a lot of these young guys to see where they are and whether or not we can count on them right now.?
The format for Saturday?s spring game is simple. It?ll be the Bulls? offense facing its own defense.
?We?re going to do it kind of offense versus defense; we?re not going to split the teams I think we need to get some good work and it?ll be a lot like the scrimmage we had in the stadium on Saturday,? Holtz said
Backup defensive end Anthony Hill will have surgery on his torn ACL and will miss the entire 2012 season...Senior defensive tackle Cory Grissom will undergo surgery on Friday and is expected to be back in time for the 2012 season...Freshman wide receiver Alex Mut will also have surgery on the ACL he tore last spring but is expected to be back in a month.
