Bulls Baseball Opens in Jacksonville
TAMPA, FEB. 14, 2014 – The USF Baseball team will begin its 2014 season this weekend playing three games in the Best Bet Classic hosted by the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.
USF was originally scheduled to host Maryland Eastern Shore in a three game series at the USF Baseball Stadium this weekend but wintry weather in the northeast forced cancellations in UMES’ flight to Tampa and were unable to make the trek.
The Bulls will now open the season against Liberty on Saturday, February 15 at 12:00 p.m. Game two of the weekend will be approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of the USF/LU game pitting the Bulls against Richmond. USF wraps-up the weekend with a game versus tournament host UNF on Sunday, February 16 at 3:00 p.m.
All games will be played at Dusty Rhodes Field at Harmon Stadium on the UNF campus.
The Flames got hot at the right time last season and pulled off a tremendous end to their 2013 season as they won the Big South Tournament and reached the Columbia, S.C. regional final. Liberty twice defeated Clemson in regional play but missed out on a bid to a Super Regional falling to South Carolina. LU returns six players and 11 pitchers from last year’s squad including ace Trey Lambert, Danny Graver, a 38th round draft pick of the Cincinnati Reds and Ashton Perritt, a Preseason All-American.
The Spiders finished the year 31-24 and made their third straight appearance in the Atlantic-10 Tournament, one of only two schools to do so over that span. Richmond is under the direction of first-year head coach Tracy Woodson who guided Valparaiso to back-to-back league titles in 2012 and 2013.
The Ospreys put together their finest year since joining the Division I ranks posting a 40-19 record in 2013. UNF will be led this year Preseason All-Atlantic-Sun picks Tyler Moore and Donnie Dewees and senior pitcher David Trexler.
