Bucs Training Camp Notebook 8-10-13

The Bucs suited up in pads Saturday for the team’s final public practice of training camp.  It was the first opportunity to put some preseason game film to use, and several players were eager to build on it, including rookie defensive end Steven Means, who saw earlier playing time Thursday due to Adrian Clayborn’s absence with a groin injury.

Means had a 3-yard tackle for a loss against the Ravens, and stepped up again today, intercepting Josh Freeman and running it into the end zone for a score.

“The coaches just told me, ‘Get off the ball more. Get around the edge more instead of running down the middle of the man.’ That’s something I took into consideration and I started applying it today.”

“He certainly has ability,” coach Greg Schiano said after practice. “He made a heck of a play today. He just needs to keep getting better. He’s a really fine talent that just needs to hone his game.”

With questions surrounding the team’s pass rush, Means sees a window of opportunity.

“You’ve got to play with high intensity and do your job – that’s a thing they hone in on. So just trying to come out here and do it all the time –I definitely might have a shot if I continue to play this way.”

Cody Grimm also made a key defensive play during red zone drills, picking off Freeman on a pass batted down by safety Dashon Goldson. Grimm was getting some reps in with the first-team defense during dime packages, while dime safety Ahmad Black rested ankle and shoulder injuries.

On offense, Tiquan Underwood had a big day, connecting with Mike Glennon  on a number of deep passes. Underwood was slowed by a hamstring strain earlier in camp, and Schiano said he sees him “getting back to his old self” while Chris Owusu, another threat for the third receiver position, rests an ankle injury.

“It’s almost like they’re taking turns. Chris had his chance when Tiquan went down and now Tiquan’s up, so that’s good. They’ll just keep battling back and forth. Kevin Ogletree’s

The team is off Sunday and will reconvene for practice Monday.

Roster Moves

The Bucs had a vacant roster position after releasing Myron Lewis and Marvin Booker and signing Mason Robinson.  They used it to re-sign veteran safety Troy Nolan, who was released by the team August 5.

Injury Updates

Defensive tackle Gerald McCoy limped off the field early with a calf strain. The injury did not appear serious.

Cornerback Darrelle Revis continues to participate in one-on-ones during receiving drills and line up with the first-team defense during teach-periods, but has yet to participate in live 11-on-11s.

Davin Joseph and Carl Nicks both participated in drills, with Nicks’ workload increasing during live action, while Joseph worked on the bike.

Chris Owusu (ankle) and Danny Gorrer (groin) are both expected to miss a minimum of a week after injuries they suffered Thursday night. Peyton Hillis, who suffered a hyperextended knee, is expected to return sooner, according to Schiano.

Hillis was on the bikes today, along with Luke Stocker (calf), Gary Gibson (ankle), Derek Landri, Davin Joseph (knee), and Ahmad Black  (ankle, shoulder).
