The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have signed former San Diego Chargers linebacker Larry English, the team announced Thursday afternoon.

English was released by the Chargers July 22. He will move to defensive end in the Bucs’ 4-3 scheme, competing with Adrian Clayborn, Steven Means, William Gholston, Da’Quan Bowers and Michael Johnson.

The 16th overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft, English entered the league with high hopes, but up until this point, his career has been a bit of a disappointment due to injuries and lack of production.

A two-time MAC Most Valuable Player at Northern Illinois, English spent five seasons with the Chargers, seeing action in 52 games with nine starts.

During that time span, he recorded 80 tackles, 11 sacks, two pass breakups, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.

He suffered a foot fracture during training camp in 2010 and last year suffered a torn biceps muscle in Week 10.
