After the Buccaneers were dominated Thursday by the Panthers, dropping Tampa Bay to 0-7 on the season, there were whispers that coach Greg Schiano actually could be in danger of losing his job on Friday. Watching the weekend NFL shows on ESPN, Fox and CBS the topic of the future of Tampa Bay Bucs head coach Schiano was a very hot one to be sure
John Clayton on ESPN said that the reason the Bucs ownership hired Butch Davis as an adviser to the team was to have an in house insurance policy. Right now Bucs ownership have Schiano on a short leash, in large part because if they fire him they will have to pay him over $15 million dollars.
But if they do part ways with Schiano look for Davis to be his in season replacement.
Obviously, Schiano hasn’t been fired (yet), but Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer reported that Schiano met with the Glazer family, the Buccaneers owners, on Friday. Afterward, Schiano reported to the Buccaneers locker room that he was still the Tampa Bay coach.
As you know by now, the season has been a disaster for Schiano and the Buccaneers, particularly with the drawn-out Josh Freeman controversy and the way it was handled, the trio of MRSA scares, and the fact the squad has lost 12 of its last 13 games.
CBS Sports’ Boomer Esiason also weighed in on the Schiano tenure on The NFL Today. Coach Schiano has a major perception problem right now. You have to wonder how long he will last in Tampa Bay.
Things are not going to quiet down till the Bucs start winning and that does not mean a game it means games.
