Bucs’ Revis Misses Practice, is Day-to-Day with Groin Injury

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers got some positive news today after an MRI revealed there were no major issues with the groin of star cornerback Darrelle Revis, who missed practice Wednesday because of an injury sustained against the Detroit Lions Sunday.
He is considered day-to-day as the Bucs prepare to take on the Carolina Panthers this week.
“Without going into too many particulars, which I’m not supposed to do, he’ll be day-to-day, so that should tell you kind of, it’s not real bad,” head coach Greg Schiano told reporters after practice. “Will he play Sunday? I don’t know. We’ve got to figure it out. That’s why he’ll be day-to-day.”
Revis left the game against the Lions just before halftime and did not return. Rookie Johnthan Banks, who was originally covering No. 2 wide receiver Nate Burleson, slid over to cover Calvin Johnson.
“[It] wasn’t any easy decision,” Schiano said of keeping Revis out of the game and moving Banks, who had been limited by a shoulder injury that week, to cover the league’s top receiver.
“We talked about…as a matter of fact, we took the field thinking that we might just play right and left and whoever got him, got him. And then we got on the field, and it was just a gut feeling that, let’s get Jonathan on him,” Schiano said.
“Sometimes you get a feeling.”
Turns out, it was the right call. Johnson was targeted eight times in the second half and managed just three catches. On third-and-12 with one minute remaining, Banks picked off quarterback Matthew Stafford on a pass intended for Johnson.
On the play, safety Kelcie McCray knocked the ball loose from Johnson’s arms at the 1-yard line, allowing Banks to recover it and preserve the win.
If Revis can’t go against the Panthers, presumably he’d get the nod to cover Carolina’s leading receiver, Steve Smith, who finished with four catches for 21 receiving yards against the Bucs in Week 8.
Schiano admitted the uncertainty with Revis is affecting his team’s game plan against
“It is. There are certain match-ups we’ll do with him. Will we do them without him? I don’t know. Again, that’s a decision we’ll have to make, so you’re going to have to have plenty of contingencies because it could happen first play of the game as well.”
He added, “I think if he can go, he can go. I think that’s the way it will be.”
