Bucs Restructure Connor Barth’s Contract

In the wake of his Achilles tear, an injury that will keep him on IR for the entire 2013 season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have restructured kicker Connor Barth’s salary, the Bucs have confirmed.
Barth, who was scheduled to earn $2.3 million in base pay this year, will instead receive $500,000. The club also adjusted his salary for 2014 from $3.15 million to $2 million, however he is eligible to recoup his salary through bonuses.
“Connor should have the right to earn every penny because he’s been such a good kicker for us over the last couple of years,” said general manager Mark Dominik, who met with Barth just prior to the Saints game on Sunday.
Because the injury was sustained in a charity basketball game and not at the team’s facilities, and Barth’s status on the non-football injury list, the Bucs were under no obligation to pay him. Dominik called Barth’s injury “unfortunate” and said as an organization, it felt like the right thing to do, given his contributions to the team.
“We have a lot of respect for Connor. We really like him as a person and as a player, both. He’s been a good Buccaneer.”
Dominik added, “I think that’s why we were able to find common ground between ourselves and Connor’s agent, and just kind of giving him a chance to do it, but at the same time, you’ve got to protect the club, so that’s why we restructured the contract a little bit. We also felt like $500,000 was very fair for everything in terms of when you look at the entire picture.”
